In which I share what books my kid has fallen in love with...
I remember after her first week of Kindergarten, Lizzy came home from school one day complaining that she hadn’t learned how to read. As if it was only going to take the week to learn. She did learn how to read eventually, though it wasn’t until the next year when she was doing online school (it was 2020/2021, after all). Now, she’s the kid who brings a book everywhere she goes. Turns out, every parent of older kids was right: find the right books and suddenly, your kid is a ruler.
The first series she fell in love with Harry Potter. I think she saw one of the movies first before we bought them for her for Christmas when she was in third grade. By the end of that calendar year, she’d read page of those seven books. We actually took her to the parks in Orlando to visit the Harry Potter world. She’s till a big fan. If she’s got time to kill on an airplane, she’s probably going to re-watch the movies again.
Feeling so sure of ourselves, we then bought her the Chronicles of Narnia. Well, it was soon March and she hadn’t even finished the first book. So much for that.
Next try was the Percy Jackson series. Turns out we knocked it out of the park with that one. I wasn’t able to get ahold of the next books quickly enough and she was not happy about it. She’s probably watched the TV show ten times at this point. We actually had to forbid her from watching it for awhile there.
Seems that the secret to a Lizzy hit is some magical powers and a modern-day setting.
Other books she’s enjoyed include the Pegasus series by Kate O’Hearn and her current read, the Mirror Visitor series from Christelle Dabos with Hildegarde Serle (Translator). She’s also started both Mistborne by Brandon Sanderson and The Hobbit as audiobooks on long car trips.

What should she try out next? Middle Grade or Young Adult highly preferred.

I was entirely an adult when I read The Hunger Games, but I read it so hard I gave myself a migraine and made Alex finish the book for me by reading out loud because I needed to know how it ended 🤣
